Bradford Area

Bradford Location - Distance

Bradford City Centre is located at a distance of 51.3 miles (82.5 KM) north east of Manchester Airport. This journey in a taxi in normal traffic conditions should take about 1 hour along the M60 and M62

Bradford Information

Bradford sits at the center of the City of Bradford, a metropolitan borough of West Yorkshire, in North England. Bradford is located at the foothills of the Pennines, 8.6 miles (14 kilometres) west of Leeds, and 16 miles (26 kilometres) north-west of Wakefield. Bradford started to be a municipal borough in 1847, and was given its charter as a city in 1897. Preceding local government reorganisation in 1974, city status was bequeathed upon the larger Bradford metropolitan borough.

As of the 2001 UK census, Bradford had a population of 293,277. There were 106,680 homes in Bradford, and the population mass was 4,560 residents per square km. For each and every 100 women, indeed there were 92.9 men. Bradford has the most youthful, swiftest growing population outside of London.

"Becoming the world's first City of Film is the ultimate celebration of Bradford's developed and vibrant history in film and media," said Colin Philpott, director of Bradford's National Media Museum. "With the UNESCO City of Film designation, Bradford will now go on to attain inspiring projects in film." Simon Beaufoy from Bradford, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Slumdog Millionaire, said the Bradford had performed a crucial role in the tale of cinema and warranted to be recognised.

Bradford has a history in film production and numerous films and TV productions have been filmed in Bradford such as Room at the Top, Billy Liar and The Red Riding Trilogy. Bradford was the venue for the films Yanks, featuring Richard Gere, and The Railway Children featuring Jenny Agutter, a 1970s classic about Victorian kids whose dad goes missing. Monty Python's innovative The Meaning of Life and the marked by controversy hit Rita, Sue and Bob Too, regarding a wedded man who can not select between 2 teenage lovers, were also filmed in the Bradford.

Bradford Transport

In past years Bradford's location in Bradfordale made communications very challenging, apart from the north. However, Bradford is now well supported by transport systems. Bradford was primarily linked to the progressing turnpike network in 1734, when the very first Yorkshire turnpike was constructed between Manchester and Leeds by way of Halifax and Bradford.

Lately Bradford is reached by several trunk roads, the A647 between Leeds and Halifax, by way of Queensbury, the A650 between Wakefield and Keighley, the A658 to Harrogate and the A6036 to Halifax by way of Shelf.

The M606, a spur off the M62 motorway, links Bradford with the nationwide motorway system. Even though initially planned to go straight into Bradford city centre it finishes at the ring road.

Bradford has had numerous schemes to connect between Bradford's train terminals. The major renovation of Bradford city centre in the 1960s offered an chance to connect the termini but was not pursued and extensive buildings were built on the alignment in the 1990s. The primary complications in linking the termini is the major discrepancy in elevation: Bradford Interchange is at the end of a very long slope in Bradford, extreme by railway guidelines, but is many feet higher than Forster Square. This incline is not unheard of in railroad track construction and the moving of Forster Square Station farther along from Bradford city centre has offered extra space in which the transition could be achieved.

Bradford Curry Capital of Britain

Bradford is famous for being home to some of the best curry houses in the country such as, Mumtaz, Akbar's, Prashad's and ZOUK.

Bradford has won the title Curry Capital of Britain two years in a row claiming the curry capital title in 2011 and 2012.

Bradford has some of the best Asian restaurants in the country and this year's team included Aagrah, Akbars, Zouk Tea Bar and Grill and Shimla Spice.

In a real coup for the city the Bradford bid saw off other strong contenders such as Leicester, Birmingham and Manchester and Glasgow in a closely fought battle.
