Sheffield Information
In 1900 Sheffield had a population of over 400,000. This was mainly because of boundary increases of Sheffield. Then in 1921 the boundaries of Sheffield were made larger and then included Handsworth and Wadsley. Then in 1935 the boundaries of Sheffield were altered again and included Totley, Dore, Beauchief, and Greenhill. In the period of time between the two events, Sheffield University was established in 1905 and the first cinema in Sheffield was built in 1910. During 1913, the first stainless steel was cast in Sheffield.
In World War I, in 1916 Sheffield was bombed by German dirigible airships with a death toll of 28 people. When World War I ended the heavy industries of Sheffield went into a recession. There was huge amount of unemployment in the city of Sheffield in the 1920s and 1930s. In Sheffield during this period was the beginning of large-scale slum clearances. The first city council houses were built in Sheffield in this period. Meanwhile, Graves Art Gallery was opened in 1934 in Sheffield. Throughout the course of the Second World War, the death toll was 589 people in Sheffield by German bombing and almost 3,000 houses were destroyed.
After the Second World War in the 1950s and 1960s, slum clearances in Sheffield resumed. A large number of new Sheffield council houses were built in estates like Gleadless Valley. Council flats were built at Park Hill and Hyde Park in Sheffield. In the 1950s and 1960s, many Asian and West Indian immigrants came to Sheffield.
As Sheffiled reached the end of the 20th century, the outer communities of Dronfield, Mosborough, Chapeltown, and Stocksbridge grew quickly.The Sheffield Emergency Services Museum opened in 1984. Meadow Hall Shopping Centre was built in 1990 in Sheffield. The long-established industries in Sheffield such as iron, steel, and cutlery decreased in the 20th century.
